Randy WrightW. Randy Wright was born in Norfolk, VA, attended Norfolk Public Schools, graduated from Norview High School, and attended post-secondary education classes for 5 years. Mr. Wright is the owner of Randy Wright & Associates, Randy Wright Printing & Publishing, and is General Partner at WWB Development & Consulting.

A member of Norfolk City Council representing Ward 5 from 1992 to 2010, Mr. Wright chaired the Economic and Community Business Development Committee and the Transportation Committee of the Council and served on the Downtown Development Task Force. He also chaired the Mayor’s Ocean View Task Force and co-chaired the East Little Creek Road Partnership.

Mr. Wright served on the Board of the Transportation District Commission of Hampton Roads from 1996 to 2010, an organization he twice served as Chair. He was Co-Chair of the Merger Committee where he was instrumental in the 2002 merger of Peninsula Transportation District Commission and Tidewater Transportation District Commission into the regional Hampton Roads Transit (HRT). The merger is known as the first friendly transit merger in United States history. Mr. Wright served as Chair of Hampton Roads Transit’s New Starts Committee and led the successful effort to bring The Tide light rail system to Norfolk where he has become known as The Father of Light Rail. Mr. Wright was recognized by the Virginia Transit Authority with its Award for Outstanding Contribution by an Individual for his leadership in securing Federal funding for light rail.

Mr. Wright has long been active in transportation matters at the State and National level. He has served as Chair and Vice Chair of the Transportation Policy Committee of the Virginia Municipal League. Additionally he has served as Chair of the Virginia Commission on Transportation in Urban Areas and Chair of the Transit Board Members of North America for the American Public Transit Association. As a result, Mr. Wright has developed working relationships with appointed officials at every top Federal level of transit administration.

Mr. Wright served on the Virginia State Board of Commerce from 1988 to 1996 where he was elected Chair for three years.

Mr. Wright served on the Virginia State Board of Corrections from 2003 to 2009.

Mr. Wright was recognized by the Virginia Chapter of the American Planning Association with its Planning Leadership Award for his instrumental role in the revitalization of East Ocean View and creation of the region’s first Traditional Neighborhood Design, the national award-winning East Beach community. The Tidewater Builders Association presented Mr. Wright with it prestigious Stanley Award in recognition of his leadership in bringing light rail to Norfolk and for development of the East Beach community.

Elected President of the Norfolk Cosmopolitan Club for 2013 – 2014

Appointed to Ghent Business Association Board of Directors 2013 – 2014.

Mr. Wright has been appointed to Norfolk Botanical Garden Board of Directors.

Mr. Wright has served on the Hampton Roads Public Transportation Alliance Board of Directors where he was elected President for three years.

Mr. Wright served as Event Chair for Norfolk-Virginia Beach Relay for Life 2010 – 2012

Mr. Wright has been appointed to Gulf Coast Fund Management Board of Directors. Gulf Coast Funds Management of McLean, VA is the Management Company of funds that invest in GreenTech Automotive, Inc. of Horn Lake, MS.

Mr. Wright has been appointed to Norfolk Sister Cities Association Board of Directors.

Mr. Wright has been appointed to Bank of Hampton Roads Norfolk Community Board.

Mr. Wright was honored by the Downtown Norfolk Council as their 2012 Peter G. Decker Jr Downtowner of the Year at the DNC 2012 Annual Meeting in Norfolk VA. Before a crowd of more than 500 Hampton Roads business professionals, Mr. Wright, known as The Father of Light Rail, was presented the award as the first recipient of the Peter G. Decker Jr Downtowner of the Year Award. Mr. Wright was nominated for this distinguished honor by Mr. Peter G. Decker Jr and Mr. Alan Nusbaum, both of which are past honorees of the Downtowner of the Year Award.
